  • Day 12 – USB

From where I am sitting right now, I probably can spot 6 random USB cords. This particular one powers my crappy knock-off wireless headphones (MP Flow Lites) that I wear when I run. I believe they were $30 on Amazon and they rarely are seated properly in their charging case despite all of my readjustment efforts. When I do get up the motivation to run, about a quarter mile in, a robotic, yet female voice says “powering off” in one ear. Thanks MP Flow Lites. Thanks.

  • Day 11 – ORCHID

At any given time I probably have about a dozen orchids around the house and they RARELY bloom. I tend to them for years and wait and wait and wait. I have gotten several to re-bloom multiple times but the waiting in between… and the air roots! They go bananas! But through some January miracle, I actually have two orchids in bloom and two that have stems and buds forming. Worth the years of patiently waiting.

  • Day 10 – Hot Wheel

Hot Wheels are a fixture in our house… on every flat surface, in every drawer and in every room for a decade now. Not sure how this one performs on the track or how it drifts but it’s exterior styling is simple yet striking. It is a 1987 Audi Quattro. Interior design is hard to determine given the tiny windows. Mileage must be a few hundred feet at least and the engineering remains a mystery. MSRP $1.29, no special financing available.

  • Day 9 – WINE GLASS

So you do know it’s dry January right? Yes

And you do know that is a white wine glass right? Yes

And it looks like you have red wine in it? Yes

And it’s a week night? Yes

And you probably drank that wine after you drew it? Yes

    You are all caught up.

  • Day 8 – FANCY SHOE

This fancy shoe was so excited to be pulled from the closet. She started her journey at the J Crew store, made her way to me and was worn at a fancy Christmas party in 2018. Since then, yes, since 2018, she has stayed in the closet. For a time in her original box on the top shelf and for a time in a poorly designed canvas hanging shoe caddy. Little did she know that today was the day she would be pulled from the closet again. Just the left shoe. And not to be worn, but to be drawn. See you again in a few years….

  • Day 7 – LEMON

About 1 hour after drawing this lemon, I sliced it open and squeezed it over shrimp that were sauteing in bacon grease and diced garlic. Shrimp and grits. It was fantastic. The lemon drawing…. eh. Just okay. A lemon really does deserve color and it also deserves some sort of scratch and sniff component so you can smell the citrus but alas… I only have black paper and a white pencil.

  • Day 6 – LIGHT SWITCH

Something you see every day. The light switch. Nothing fancy here. Single switch. Single pole. No dimmer. No slide switch or toggles. No smart technology or timer with motion detection or voice activation. No built in nightlight. No fancy switch plate cover. Slotted screw heads not even pointing in the same direction.

  • Day 5 – SPATULA

Have you read all the articles about how bad black plastic utensils are for cooking? They give off all these flame retardant chemicals when you cook with them because they are made from recycled plastic? And then the authors of the study said that they made a math mistake? Something about a reference dose of 420,000 nanograms of toxic chemicals? And that it really isn’t THAT bad for you? But they still say you should throw away the black plastic? You know, those articles? Yep, well this here is my black plastic pancake spatula. The one I use all the time. The only device for perfectly flipping a pancake.

  • Day 4 – GLOVE

I must start off by saying this is “not my favorite” – a phrase I have taught my kids to use when describing new foods they don’t really like. But according to the plan, I will post them all. The good, the bad and the ugly. This is a very nice and warm gray fuzzy flannel winter glove but I tried too hard to capture the “fuzzy” and really overdid it. And it oddly looks like it’s pinching something between the thumb and pointer finger. I vow to revisit a glove on a later date but for now, this is the best I’ve got.
